PAUL MATHIS was born in Camden January 27, 1901, one of at least six children born to George A. and Mary Emma Mathis. His grandfather, Mahlon Fowler Ivins Sr., was prominent in Camden political and business circles, as was his uncle Mahlon F. Ivins Jr. The 1910 Census shows the family living at 402 Chambers Avenue. He was still in Camden as late as January 1920. The Census shows him living with his widowed grandmother, Cornelia Ivins, at 313 South 6th Street. He was then working as a salesman. After studying dance with Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis, and touring the country with their troupe, he returned to Camden. He traveled to Europe twice in 1929. He was back at 313 South 6th Street with his grandmother when the census was enumerated in April of 1930. In 1935 Paul Mathis opened a dance academy in New York, where he had several renown pupils. He went on tour with his partner, William Bull, in 1938. The tour kept the pair overseas for over two months. Sailing from Le Havre, Mathis and Bull returned to New York on April 14, 1938, aboard the Ile de France. Paul Mathis, last a resident of Medford NJ, passed in January of 1980. |

Years ago he studied in California under Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, later dancing with them on their tours of the country. He started his own school in New York three years ago and now has his studio at 39 West Sixty-seventh street, New York. His latest pupils have been Clair Luce, now playing in New York; the late Rosamond Pinchot and Jane Wyatt, motion picture star.
