HERBERT JOHN BLAHA was born in Camden, New Jersey in February 1924 to Anton and Barbara Blaha. His father who was born in what was then Austria-Hungary worked as an advertising designer and artist. The Blaha family moved to 1044 Lois Avenue in Camden's Cramer Hill section shortly before the June 1910 Census. The family included two older brothers Frank, who died young from tuberculosis, and Elmer Blaha.

While Herbert was in high school, his parents past away and he moved to Fayetteville North Carolina to live with his brother Elmer.  After graduating high school and a few odd jobs, Herbert secured an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1947.  Herbert went into the Marine Corps, went on to pilot school, and served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.  He retired in 1979 at the rank of Brigadier General.

Herbert J. Blaha passed away in Bexar County, Texas on April 13, 1989, and was buried at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery near his brother Elmer
