Camden firefighter helps to subdue man
A city firefighter helped subdue a man who allegedly was trying to disarm a police officer during a struggle, authorities said Monday.
The on-duty firefighter, Gamalier Rivera, rushed from a nearby fire station to help an officer who had responded to a domestic incident in the Parkside section about 8:25 p.m. Sunday, said Camden police.
Authorities said the officer, whose name was not released, had gone to the scene of a domestic assault in the 1100 block of Kaighn Avenue, then searched the area for a suspect, Luis Rivera, 25, of Pennsauken.
When the officer saw the suspect near Kaighn and Mount Ephraim avenues, Luis Rivera allegedly rushed him, began punching him in the face and grabbed for his gun, authorities said.
Gamalier Rivera, the firefighter immediately intervened, police said.
Luis Rivera was charged with aggravated assault and other offenses..
