ERVIN F. "BUD" RAY JR. was one of at least six children born to Ervin and Jennie Ray. He was born in New Jersey around 1925. His grandparents and father had lived in Alloway Township in Salem County in 1910, but had moved to Camden by 1924, living at 512 Washington Street

Ervin Ray Sr. was working as an ironworker in Philadelphia when the 1929 Camden City Directory was compiled. The family then lived at 709 Carman Street. The Rays were still at that address in April of 1930, when the census was enumerated. At that time there were four children, Evelyn, Ervin Jr., Darris, and Alice. The Ervin Ray family later moved to Cramer Hill, as did his grandparents.

The 1947 City Directory shows Ervin and Jennie Ray and his family living at 816 North 34th Street in Cramer Hill. Grandparents Zachias and Harriet Ray were living at 2920 Buren Avenue, also in Cramer Hill. Ervin Ray Jr. married Gloria Reed about 1949. He was sworn in as a member of the Camden Police Department on December 16, 1950. Coincidentally, on that same day Mrs. Ellen Leary gave birth to a son, Clifford. Clifford Leary would one day himself become a Camden Police officer and would also become Ervin Ray's son-in-law.

Ervin and Gloria Ray made their home for many years at 1239 North 20th Street in Cramer Hill. By 1968 he had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant. His father passed away in December of 1974, at the age of 70. Ervin F. Ray and family were still living at 1239 North 20th Street as late as 1977. When he retired from the Camden Police Department in the early 1980s Ervin F. Ray had reached the rank of Lieutenant.

Last a resident of Franklinville NJ, Ervin F. Ray passed away on December 27th of 1999, survived by his wife, sons John, William, Ervin and Keith, and a daughter, named Gloria after her mother, the wife of long-time Camden Police officer Clifford Leary.
