ELMA "SISSY" KANE was on of five children born to George and Ellen Leary. She was born in Camden, New Jersey around 1940. The Learys were living at 67 Penn Street when the 1940 City Directory was compiled. By 1943 the family had moved to 101 Penn Street, where they remained through 1947. The family later moved to the Ablett Village homes on River Avenue at State Street, where they lived into the late 1950s. The Leary's had five children- daughter Elma and four sons Herbert, Clifford, George, and Elmer. Elmer Leary and Clifford Leary became career police officers with the Camden Police Department, while son Herbert C. Leary went to the Camden Fire Department, where he reached the rank of Chief of department before his retirement. A nephew, also named Herbert Leary, currently serves as a Captain with the Camden Fire Department.

Elma Leary graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1957. She was a dancer on the old American Bandstand television program that originated out of Philadelphia each weekday afternoon. 

Elma Leary was married to Thomas V. Kane, who served over 24 years as a member of the Camden Fire Department. In the 1970s she was the President of the Camden City Firefighter Wives' Association. She founded and operated the Kane Business Institute in Cherry Hill and Camden, NJ and influenced the lives of hundreds of students. 

Thomas Kane retired from the Camden Fire Department in 1993 to work full time in the business school. The Kanes later settled in Florida.  

Elma Kane was last a resident of Safety Harbor, Florida. She passed away on June 16, 2013.

Elma "Sissy" Kane (nee Leary), age 73, recently of Safety Harbor, FL, and long time resident of South Jersey died on June 16, 2013. She is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, Thomas Kane, and her adoring children Kathleen Kane Rodis (Jon), Colleen Russo (Sam) and Tom Kane. She will be desperately missed by her Grandchildren Sam, Kelly, Megan, Erin, Tommy, Danny and Nora and numerous other family and friends.

Sissy was born and raised in the city of Camden and graduated in 1957 from Woodrow Wilson HS. She was an original "Bandstander" and loved to dance. In the 1970's, she was the President of the Camden City Firefighter Wives' Association. Sissy founded and operated Kane Business Institute in Cherry Hill and Camden, NJ and influenced the lives of hundreds of students.

A memorial celebration of Sissy's life will be held in the near future in the South Jersey area. Further details to follow.
