TECHNICAL
SERGEANT SAMUEL J. BURNS was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Burns. He
grew up in Gloucester City NJ, where his parents lived at 215 Orlando
Avenue. He attended Gloucester High School, where he managed the school
football team. After he graduated from high school, he played with the
semi-pro Gloucester Crescents. He had attended Temple University ion
Philadelphia and also had worked at a shipyard in Baltimore MD before
enlisting tin the United States Army in March of 1941. Samuel
Burns qualified for flight duty, and was part of a bomber crew when he
was killed over Germany on December 19, 1943. He was 22 at the time.
Samuel Burns was survived b his parents, and a brother, George Burns,
who was then serving with the Seabees in California. His parents were
notified on January 13, 1944 of his death, which was reported in the
evening edition of the Saturday, February 5, 1944 Camden Courier-Post. |
