SERGEANT JOHN GARTLAND ELLIOT, 25, of 212 Rosalind Avenue, Gloucester City NJ, the son of Edmund G. and Olivia Elliot, died on April 21, 1945 at a hospital in Lawson GA, due to injuries suffered in a car crash two days earlier at Columbus GA. He had grown up in Gloucester City, where his father was a crane operator in a nearby shipyard. Born in 1919, John Elliot enlisted into the Army in 1939, and was stationed at Fort Benning GA. He was survived by his parents, a brother Edmund Jr., sisters Mrs. Frances Cahill and Mrs. Eleanor Pine, all of Gloucester City, and Mrs. Charolette Dallas of Mullica Hill NJ. His funeral was held at Brown and Monmouth Streets in Gloucester City, and a Requiem mass was said for him at St. Mary's Church, also in Gloucester City. He was buried at New St. Mary's Cemetery in Bellmawr NJ, where he now lies next his parents, brother Edmond, sister Charolette, and other family members. |
