Atrocities, Arson, Training, and Firehouse Life

This page and the other pages in this series are the successors to the series of web-page about the Camden Fire Department that began with the page Camden Fire Department: The Fires of the Summer of 2011. On this and other pages in the series you will find pictures and information regarding different events and hhaspects of the fire service in Camden, New Jersey.

On August 22, 2012 Camden was in the headlines once again, as a woman living on Kaighn Avenue, high on drugs AND with a history of mental illness, murdered her own child then took her life. This was spun in the media as being indicative of things wrong in Camden. This however, is not the case, this event, while unfortunate, indicates NOTHING about the mindset and culture of anyone except the person involved. Another event that happened the same day, however, is, sadly quite indicative of where too many in the city are... because it was an atrocity that has happened before in the city and will happen again. A person or persons unknown too a dog to a vacant lot at Davis Street and Sheridan Street, poured a flammable liquid on a dog, and set the poor animal on fire.

The woman who killed her child was mentally incapacitated. The fiends who torched the dog were not... they had to decide to do this, find a place to do it, get the accelerant, get the dog, go there, pour the accelerant, light the fire, then evade detection. This was a conscious and premeditated act. The child murder was a tragedy. The dog murder was an atrocity... and yes Virginia, there is a difference.

I was out on the White Horse Pike in Lawnside when a call came on the radio about a trash fire at Davis and Sheridan. I thought I would go over just to see what was going on... I was sort of surprised when Collingswood's Ladder was also dispatched to this fire, which indicated to me that there was more to this than a trash fire. Anyway, by the time I got there, everything was over.... Squad 7 was on scene along with Collingswood's ladder and the Camden police. I took a few pictures, then drove over to Fire Headquarters where anti-terrorism training was being conducted. Took a few more pictures! A visiting returned fireman from the Boston area was there taking pictures as well. He wanted to go to Liberty Station so I had him follow me, then I called it day.

As with the web page covering other Camden Fire Department events, if you can identify anyone that I've missed, please e-mail me. (I'm terrible at at names and faces).
