June 18-19, 2012 - 6 Alarm Fire at Magnetic Metals
11:07 PM to 11;59 PM

This page and the other pages in this series are the successors to the series of web-page about the Camden Fire Department that began with the page Camden Fire Department: The Fires of the Summer of 2011. On this and other pages in the series you will find pictures and information regarding different events and aspects of the fire service in Camden, New Jersey.

Magnetic Metals Corporation has been in operation on Hayes Avenue in the Cramer Hill section of Camden since 1942, manufacturing high grade nickel alloy laminations. The biggest fire to date in 2012, a building that was in the process of being emptied out caught fire around 11:00 PM on June 18, 2012. The fire went to six alarms before being brought under control.

Ted Aurig of www.NewJerseyFireground.com wrote the following account of the blaze:

On June 19th, 2012 shortly before 11 p.m. Camden County Communications started to receive a couple calls of a warehouse on fire at 21st. and Hayes Ave’s. A Full box was dispatched to 1900 Hayes Ave at Magnetic Metals for a building fire in the Cramer Hill section of the city. Camden County Radio advised responding units they were receiving calls for flames through the windows of the building. Companies arrived and reported fire through the roof of a commercial building. Battalion 2 struck the 2nd Alarm. A 3rd Alarm was transmitted several minutes later. At the 20 minute mark, Command reported companies were operating in defensive operations as the Command staff was paring up Engine companies with the Ladder Companies for Ladder Pipe operations with heavy fire through the roof. Three additional Engine companies were special called to the scene. A 4th Alarm was transmitted. Car 3 reported fire running the roofline of a 350x400 warehouse. On the 5th Alarm a 5” strike team was dispatched. At the 90 minute mark Command reported the fire to still be doubtful. Fire conditions were present under the roof. Two additional Engines were special called to supply an additional Tower Ladder. The Truck Companies set up on all sides of the building in defensive operation. Companies remained operating. A 6th Alarm was transmitted. At the 3 hour mark companies were making good progress. The fire was officially placed under control at 2:49 A.M.

No injuries were reported on the fire ground. The Camden City, Camden County and State Fire Marshals were on scene investigating the fire.

According to press reports approx. 100 residents were evacuated from the area due to heavy smoke. This was the 2nd working warehouse fire in the City of Camden within 24 hours. The first fire was reported around 5 p.m. for a vacant warehouse. That fire was held to an All Hands Box.

I arrived on scene at about the 13 minute mark, took my first shot at 11:07 AM, and was still there well over five hours later, taking my last shot at 4:45 AM. When I returned a few hours later, Engine 11 was still operating, wetting down hot spots.

This is the first of four pages of photos of this fire. Links to continue to the next page or skip ahead are at the bottom of this page.

The photos are for the most part presented in the order in which they were taken... I was using two cameras, some photos taken in the same minute on each camera may be sequenced wrong, but that's small stuff!

As with the web page covering other Camden Fire Department events, if you can identify anyone that I've missed, please e-mail me. (I'm terrible at at names and faces).
