IN MEMORIAM

RAND J. CHANDLER, JR.

Police Officer Rand Chandler

Rand J. Chandler was the fifth of nine children born to Russell S. and Elizabeth Chandler. The 1947 Camden City Directory shows the family living at 810 Howard Street, Russell Chandler then working as a machinist.

Rand J. Chandler was married when he joined the police force in November of 1968, his wife Nancy having bore a son Rand Jr., and a daughter, also named Nancy. Officer Chandler was guarding vehicles during the September 1969 civil disturbance when a sniper fired at him. An eleven year- old girl was also killed. While the murderer of Rand J. Chandler was never apprehended, the blame for his death can and should be affixed to the two or three individuals known to have incited the disturbance. It is unfortunate that laws now on the books, which would have assigned culpability to these parties, were not in effect then, as other lives were lost as the result of these same instigators' actions in ensuing years.

Mrs. Nancy Chandler eventually remarried, but sadly died of a stroke in the early 1980s. Rand J. Chandler Jr. became a microbiologist, while daughter Nancy is married with children as of 2004.
