PRIVATE STANISLAW GONTARSKI was born on July 19, 1893 in an area of Poland that was then part of the old Russian empire He was the son of Jan Gontarski of 931 Mechanic Street in Camden NJ. When he registered for the draft in 1917 he lived at 1158 Morton Street, and worked as a laborer at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard on Broadway. His older brothers Harovine (Herman) and Wladyslaw also worked at New York Shiop.

Private Gontarski was drafted and was among the first local draftees to go to Camp Dix NJ on September 20, 1917. He was assigned to Company K of the 327th Infantry Regiment, and went overseas as a member of Company L, 327th Infantry Regiment. 

Private Gontarski was killed in action by a gunshot to the abdomen during the Battle of the Argonne Forest on October 12, 1918.
