PRIVATE STANISLAW GONTARSKI was born on July 19, 1893 in a village called Lipki, in an area of Poland that was then part of the old Russian empire to Jan and Anna Gontarski. 

Stanislaw Gontarski emigrated to America in 1912, leaving from Hamburg aboard the steamship Kaiserin Auguste Victoria on July 12, 1912 along with his father Jan. Brothers  Harovine (Herman) and Wladyslaw had already arrived and had settled in Camden. 

When he registered for the draft in 1917 Stanislaw Gontarski was living at 1158 Morton Street, and working as a laborer at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard on Broadway. His older brothers Harovine (Herman) and Wladyslaw also worked at New York Ship.

Private Gontarski was drafted and was among the first local draftees to be called up. On September 20, 1917 he was sent to Camp Dix NJ. He was assigned to Company K of the 327th Infantry Regiment, and went overseas as a member of Company L, 327th Infantry Regiment. 

Private Gontarski was killed in action by a gunshot to the abdomen during the Battle of the Argonne Forest on October 12, 1918.  He was survived by his father, Jan Gontarski of 931 Mechanic Street in Camden, and his brothers.
