PRIVATE WILLIAM M. HICKMAN born on November 3, 1892 in Philadelphia PA, the son of William C. and Elizabeth Louise Hickman. When the 1900 Census was enumerated, the family, which included four other children, lived at 256 Grant Street in Philadelphia. The elder Hickman worked as a teamster. By 1910 the family had moved to 836 Cumberland Street in Gloucester City NJ. They later moved to 613 Market Street in Gloucester City. When the Census was taken in 1910 both William M. Hickman and his brother Clyde were working as opticians.

William M. Hickman registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 in Philadelphia. he was then living at 3441 North 6th Street. He was working as an optician for McIntire, Magee & Brown of 723 Sansom Street, Philadelphia PA. He was called up on April 29, 1918, and was sent to Camp Lee VA for training. He went overseas as a member of Company B, 145th Infantry Regiment. He arrived in France on June 22, 1918.

On September 29, 1918 Private Hickman was one of 12 volunteers who endeavored to capture a German machine gun nest in the Argonne Forest. He was shot in the hip, and as he fell took a bullet to the forehead and was killed instantly. He was the only one of the 12 to be slain. 

William Hickman was survived by his parents and siblings.
