PRIVATE WILLIAM COONROD is listed in the book "Camden County In The Great War". It was assumed that when he died at Camp Dix NJ on October 5, 1918 from Spanish influenza, that he was from Camden NJ. This apparently was an error, as William Coonrod was from the town of Camden in Oneida County NY. The Army had his next of kin as Mrs. Elizabeth Wentworth. Mrs. Wentworth appears in the 1926 census for Camden, Oneida County NY. Private William Coonrod is also listed as an Oneida County NY soldier who died of disease while serving, and having been from the town of Camden. When the book "Camden County In The Great War" was being researched in the early 1920s, an attempt was made to find his family. The book states that "The investigating committee and the police were unable to locate his relatives. No street address was given by the government." This mystery was finally solved on December 30, 2002 by Phillip Cohen of Camden NJ. Research conducted in January of 2006 revealed that another soldier listed in "Camden County In The Great War", Sergeant Silas Furbush, also was from Camden NY. |
