PRIVATE PERCY LINCOLN HOLLINSHED was the son of Henry and Mary Hollinshed. He was born in Camden NJ in August of 1890. The Hollinshed family then lived at 932 Broadway. By 1900 they had moved to Zimmerman Avenue in Pennsauken NJ. When 1910 brought another Census Henry Hollinshed had passed away. The family was still living on Zimmerman Avenue. Percy Hollinshed was working as a clerk in a "wholesale house", according to the Census. Interestingly enough, older brother Frank, though only 24, listed his occupation as principal of a public school. Percy Hollinshed enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on April 14, 1917. He spent four months training at Parris Island SC, then a month at the Marine base at Quantico VA, before sailing for France on the transport SS Henderson on August 1, 1917. After a short training period at St. Nazaire, France and at Bordeaux, Percy Hollinshed and his unit were sent to the front. He was in the trenches at Verdun, and took part in the skirmishes that led up to the Battle of Belleau Wood, where he was fatally wounded on June 7, 1918. He was 28 at the time of his death. Percy Hollinshed was brought home after the war and buried at Arlington Cemetery in Pennsauken NJ, not far from his home. |
