Harry A. Steeple

PRIVATE HARRY A. STEEPLE was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Steeple, of 826 South 5^th Street, Camden NJ. Private Steeple enlisted in the United States Navy when America entered the war. He marched away with the 2^nd Battalion, New Jersey Naval Militia, on Easter Day, 1917, but was rejected for active service. On July 20, he enlisted in the Army, and was sent to Fort Slocum NY. Assigned to Company E, 9^th Infantry Regiment, he sailed for France on September 7, 1917.

Private Steeple was killed in a heroic manner at Vaux, France, on July 2, 1918. He was a dispatch runner, and was carrying a dispatch for his commanding officer while his company was taking part in an action that resulted in the capture of 500 Germans when he was killed. He was buried at Monnaux, France.
