PRIVATE EDWARD M. McGOWAN was the son of John J. and Mary J. McGowan. Along with another son, Joseph, the McGowan family lived at 49 Marlton Avenue in Camden NJ. The elder McGowan worked as a clerk in a grocery store, he would go on to owning his own business later in life. Edward McGowan had married before the war, and the with his wife Emily E. McGowan lived with his parents at the Marlton Avenue address. In December of 1918, a son Edward M. Jr. was born.

Private Edward McGowan was training with the 9th Company, 3rd Division Barracks at Camp Hancock, August GA, when he died of pneumonia on January 15, 1919. His body was returned to New Jersey and he was buried in Camden. His parents were still living on Marlton Avenue as late as April of 1930.
