FIREMAN SECOND CLASS CARL BURDETTE BUTCHER was the son of Charles Monroe Butcher and his wife, the former Minnie Burdette. He was born in New Jersey in 1897. The family was living at 931 Broadway in Camden when the 1906 Camden City Directory was compiled. Charles M. Butcher was then the manager of Kain's Pharmacy at the corner of South 5th and Pine Streets in Camden. The Butcher family had moved to 121 Fourth Avenue in Haddon Heights, New Jersey by the time Census was taken in 1910. Charles Butcher was still working in drug stores. Carl B. Butcher enlisted in the United States Navy on April 11, 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By the fall of 1918 he had been promoted to Fireman Second Class. Fireman Second Class Butcher died of bronchial pneumonia at New York City, New York on October 11, 1918. He was survived by his parents and siblings Virginia and Luther Butcher. The family was still living in Haddon Heights as late as April of 1930. The now defunct Hoyle-Butcher Post 149 of the American Legion, which for many years was located at Kings Highway and West Atlantic Avenue in Haddon Heights, was named in part for Carl Butcher. |
