Camden, NJ

7th
Street

SEVENTH STREET was one of Camden's original streets, and over the years expanded far beyond it's original length, now running south to north, with a few major interruptions, from Morgan Boulevard to Pyne Point in North Camden. There are three major sections to Seventh Street; from Federal Street north the Pyne Point; from Benson Street south to Kaighn Avenue, and from Van Hook Street south to Morgan Boulevard.

In the early 1940s, during World War II the Chelton Terrace public housing project was built, with homes in the 2100 block of South Seventh, between Chelton Avenue and the railroad tracks that run east from Broadway along Bulson Street. These homes were owned and operated by the Housing Authority of the City of Camden.

Homes and business along Seventh Street between Van Hook Street and Ferry Avenue were razed in the early 1950s to make way for the Roosevelt Manor public housing project, also owned and operated by the Housing Authority of the City of Camden. Roosevelt Manor is slated for demolition in late 2004 and 2005, and new construction is expected to take place.

Do you have a Seventh Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

I was a resident of North 7th Street probably for the first 15 years of my life. I lived at 905 North 7th right next door to Sam Payne. He often would take me to his print shop on Elm Street where his sister lived upstairs above the shop. At 901 North 7th was Charles Barbarito's Barbershop where I got my haircuts. Next at 903 was Papazian's tailor shop and dry cleaner. 909 was the John Ward family who worked on the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore line Railroad with his son Jack. Next at 911 was the Bucchiero Family who moved to Berlin, NJ around 1960 and the house was sold to a Miller family. Next was the home of an undertaker whose name I can't recall, and the last house was the Gianetti family.

Then came Bailey Street where the house was owned by a Mr. and Mrs. Bailey who was a collector of clocks. Mrs. Bailey use to invite me in for cookies when dozens of clocks would all start chiming the hour at the same time. On the opposite side of York Street on 7th was Sam Fritz's corner grocery store. Molotsky's Candy store was on another corner and the Matlack family had the last corner at 7th and York. Matlack had a small store at the rear of the house facing York which he opened only in late November till Christmas to sell Christmas trees, lights and ornaments.

I use to hang out at Pyne Poynt park all the time and was probably the only kid in the neighborhood who got along with the park guard and caretaker Otis Smith. His wife (Sophie) was an invalid and he would ask me to stay with her while he made his rounds when the park closed at night. Afterward Mr. Smith would get his car and  the three of us would go to Marbett's on Admiral Wilson Boulevard for hamburgers then  he would drop me off at home.

My name is Richard Mori, I am the owner of the Somerdale Bar and Grille on White Horse Pike in Somerdale. Stop in someday and you might meet quite a few past residents of North Camden. I recall many of the things about living there, the stores, the circus pitching tent just across the State Street Bridge next to the city dump, and just across State Street my Grandfather was one of the persons that had a 'Victory Garden' where he grew vegetables for the family. He had a small shack on the "farm" where he could escape for a few hours from my Grandmother.

5 escape Camden row house fire

By CLINT RILEY Courier-Post Staff

CAMDEN - Five people escaped from a string of burning row houses in North Camden Tuesday morning, moments before intense smoke and flames' erupted into the street.

A young woman, who inhaled large amounts of smoke and suffered minor facial bums while fleeing from 905 North 7th Street, was rushed to the trauma unit at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center, Camden.

America Alicea, 23, no known address, was in critical condition in the trauma unit Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Two young men she was visiting in the row house where the fire started shortly after 10 a.m. escaped uninjured.

Authorities said they had not positively identified the men.     '

There was water, but no electric or gas service to the row house, fire officials said. Authorities suspect the men were saying there without the owner's permission after the landlord closed the residence recently.

The Camden County Fire Marshal's Office and city police continue to investigate what caused the fire.

Authorities said Tuesday's blaze easily could have been worse.

"It spread real fast. A matter of seconds," said Virginia Danks, a neighbor who saw the fire when she glanced out the front door.

City police Sgt. Anthony Martino happened to be in the neighborhood just as the two-alarm blaze began to rage. He raced to alert people inside 905, 907, 909 and 911 North 7th Street.

Raul and Isabel Rodriguez "answered his calls and emerged from inside a brick row house two doors away from where the fire began.

"I was sleeping. Somebody walked on the porch and woke me," said Rodriguez, 51, of 909 North 7th Street.

The three people inside 905 North 7th Street escaped on their own, authorities said.

"We were lucky," said Martino, who was aided by partner Patrolman Mike Hughes. "Everybody was lucky."

Firefighters from two city battalions, equipped with aerial trucks, controlled the fire before flames spread beyond the Rodriguezes' front porch. Two adjoining row houses at 905 and 907 North 7th Street. were gutted by fire. Only 905 and 909 North 7th were occupied.

One firefighter was treated at Cooper for a minor puncture wound to his foot. He sustained the injury when he stepped on a sharp object while battling the blaze.

TAXI DRIVER HELD UP BY PASSENGER HE BUT HE FAILS TO GET MONEY

A taxicab passenger last night held up Alfred K. Shawcross, the driver, of 820 North Seventh Street, at Front and Federal streets, but obtained no money because Shawcross had none.

Shawcross told Detective Clarence Arthur the bandit, about five feet seven inches tall, weighing 145 pounds, wearing a brown suit and no hat, approached him at Sixth and Market streets and asked to be driven to Front and Federal streets.

When the passenger alighted he pressed a pistol against Shawcross and demanded his money. Shawcross told him he was making his first trip of the night and had nothing. The bandit ran east on Third Street and disappeared.

BRIDEGROOM MISSING

A 54-year-old bridegroom, missing from his home for nearly two months, was sought yesterday by Camden police.

Mrs. Lillie' Carlysle, 54, of 606 North Seventh Street, wrote to the police that she and Samuel Carlysle, 54, were married January 23 in the State Street M. E., Church by Rev. G. W. Hanners.

We lived very happily together until threee months ago," she continued.

"On April 16 he mysteriously disappeared leaving for work. He has not been seen or heard of since. 1 am sure something dreadful must have happened to him. He had some minor trouble with the man he worked for and I think that must have caused him to leave."

My Grand Parents Hugh & Cathrine Kennedy AKA as the "Camden Window Washer Man" lived at 625 Elm Street and my Aunt Catherine Kennedy lived on Pearl Street between 6th & 7th Streets. My first friends lived on Birch Street. One of my fondest memories was of the corner confectionary store on 7th & Birch known then as "Benny's". Never knew his real name. I attended Holy Name, Pyne Point and Woodrow Wilson Schools. I have a picture of me on the same Pony that Albert Bass from 6th Street, that had his picture taken on State Street on your site. Roy & Albert Bass were good friends of mine.

HUSBAND, WOMAN HELD ON CHARGE WIFE MAKES

Mrs. Bessie A. Gaunt, of 4115 Westfield Avenue, yesterday appeared in police court and charged her husband, Emerson Gaunt, 32, of 840 Pearl Street, and Mrs. Nellie Olsen, 33, of 408 North Seventh Street, with misconduct.

The Gaunts have been estranged for some four years. Mrs. Gaunt told Police Judge Pancoast she had been keeping her husband under surveillance of late and on May 15, followed him to the Olsen home. Mrs. Gaunt said she parked her car near the house and saw her husband enter.

Detective John Trout and Walter Smith arrested both Gaunt and Mrs. Olsen in the latter's house at 8 p. m. on May 30.

Judge Pancoast held Gaunt and Mrs. Olsen in $500 bail each for the grand jury.

Young Dog Seeks Home

To the Editor:

Sir—I have a young dog about six months old who would desire a good home. It is impossible for me to keep it as I have another which is very vicious.

The puppy is kind and affectionate and well marked. It would be a grand dog around children.

The Reeves Garage, a large commerce building at 106-108 North Seventh Street, was destroyed in a spectacular fire and explosion on March 16, 1910. Night Watchman Albert Bell discovered heavy fire roaring in the basement about 1:30 A.M. He drove his vehicle to fire headquarters and reported a verbal alarm. As the blaze spread quickly, a  second alarm was transmitted shortly after arrival. As Hosemen John Lennox and John Lutts of Engine Company 2 were advancing a big line near the blazing building a tremendous explosion carried them twenty feet across the street.

This mishap probably saved the lives of both members in that the blazing building literally blew apart, propelling broken masonry with the force of shrapnel. The west wall of the garage penetrated the adjacent Lutheran Church, leaving a gaping hole in the church wall. A general alarm was sounded following the explosion. Lennox and Lutts suffered lacerations and bruises as did Captain Carter of Hook & Ladder Company 1. Twenty-three automobiles were destroyed in the blaze with an estimated loss of $80,000.

Helen L. Delisle Fean was my Mother's Mother. My great-grandfather, Louis DeLisle, was in that house 108 North 7th Street) until his death around 1956. I have attached a picture that was taken in that house in Camden in 1945. It was probably my older brother's christening. That's my Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandfather and my brother who was born 11/26/1945. If you notice, Louis' right hand is missing fingers. He was a chef for Campbell Soup from 1900 on and had lost them during a demonstration of canning equipment. He was featured on magazine ads for Campbell's in the 1920's wearing his chef's outfit.

Poor Acting Leads To Youth's Arrest In Theft of Cash

Curious detectives yesterday made it embarrassing for Charles Pennington, 21, of 906 South Seventh street.

The youth told his employer, Louis Tartar, junk dealer of Ninth and Liberty streets, a stranger stole $25 in receipts from a load of materials shipped to Philadelphia. Pennington's employer took him to the Detective Bureau to report the theft. There, Detectives Benjamin Simon and Joseph Mardino chatted with the youth.

Frankly doubting the story he told, the detectives suggested Pennington disrobe. The sleuths found $22 concealed in his shoes. Simon and Mardino said Pennington admitted the money belonged to his employer and that the theft story was false. He was held for police court on a larceny charge.

TILL TAPPING CHARGED

Because Harold Waters, 32, of 913 South Seventh Street, hurried from a South Camden restaurant before he had finished his sandwich and coffee he was sent to the county jail Saturday, starting a 30-day sentence on a charge of "tapping" the restaurant's cash register for $10.

Waters was arrested on complaint of Mrs. Ida Breer, proprietor of the restaurant at Ninth and Walnut streets. She said Waters ordered a cup of coffee and sandwich, and while she was preparing the order, $10 disappeared from the cash register. Waters hurriedly left the restaurant after paying for his food, she said, and then she discovered the loss.

Waters' defense was that he only had 25 cents so he couldn't have taken the $10. Judge Pancoast decided a man with only 25 cents would not spend 10 cents, for coffee and sandwich and leave the restaurant before he had finished eating..

Camden water main springs leak

A 16-inch water main in the vicinity of 7th and Chestnut streets sprung a leak and water company workers installed a plate on Wednesday as a precaution.

United Water will begin repairing the leak Monday, city officials said.

The repairs may result in some customers losing service and noticing discolored water from their taps.

If residents loose water service or see discoloration, they should call (856) 488-2041 immediately, said Patrick Keating, director of public works.

I grew up in Camden from birth 1954-1972. My Grandparents were Dymitro & Tekla Zawoyski who lived on 7th Street by Ferry Avenue.  His property had many cherry trees, roses, berries, and many other plants and flowers.  I think he may have had two or even three properties.  He lost two daughters to the influenza outbreak, and three survived, my mom was actually born much later.  He sold insurance, owned an ice cream store, and the tavern on Fourth Street, Stan's Cafe We lived at 513 Ferry Avenue.  My parents were Olga and Richard Murray.

Our family was among those first families that moved into Chelton Terrace ... 2106 South 7th Street.

Our house had a large lawn at the intersection. It was a close knit neighborhood and, as a kid, I didn't realize it was segregated. We recall Paul, the bread man... the fish man, the ice cream carts, the ice man, the produce man, the fish man... all came through the back drive to regular, waiting customers. They were known by first names as if part of all those families.

FOUR MEN AND WOMAN ADMIT DISPUTE CHARGE

Four men and a woman were fined $25 each yesterday after they perplexed Police Judge Pancoast by pleading guilty to a disorderly conduct charge, but denied that they had been disorderly.

The defendants are Joseph and William Greenan, brothers, 38 and 24, respectively, both of, 741 Fairview Street; Edward Covey, 24, of 2221 South Seventh Street; Walter Koscianski, 28, of 966 Bulson Street, and Mary Johnson, 18, of 224 Morris Street, Gloucester.

They were arrested Sunday night by Motorcycle Policeman Thomas Kauffman at Tenth and Bulson Streets. Earlier, he had stopped them on Admiral Wilson Boulevard and because they had been drinking but were not drunk, he told them to go home.

Later someone called police headquarters and said that Kauffman was drunk. He was suspicious and arrested the five. Yesterday they pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct, but denied they had telephoned headquarters or had done anything disorderly.

CITY EXTENDS PACT FOR TRACK REMOVAL
Pennsy Given Another Year to Start Seventh Street Project

The city commission yesterday afternoon extended for another year a three-year-old agreement entered into by the Pennsylvania Railroad to remove its Seventh Street tracks in Camden and thereby eliminate 14 grade crossings.

The extension in time was voted when the commission passed on final reading an ordinance introduced several weeks ago. It is the latest of several extensions granted to postpone start of the work.

City Solicitor E. G. C. Bleakly said the delays have been agreed to by the city and the railroad because the latter is not prepared at this time to carry out the project and because the city has no money.

Under the agreement, the railroad was to abandon use of the Seventh Street tracks and the city was to purchase the right of way from the railroad for use as a boulevard at a cost of $286,000. The railroad is to receive a first payment of $106.000.

The city-railroad plans called for electrification of the Tenth Street steam railroad over which the shore trains now using Seventh Street will run.
