VINE STREET in North Camden is on of Camden's "Tree" streets, a feature most likely copied from Philadelphia. Vine Street at one time ran all the way to the Delaware River, where the Cooper's Point Ferry, also known as the Vine Street Ferry, had its terminal. Heading east, Vine Street, like most of the other streets in North Camden, runs all the way to 10th Street. Vine Street is where you will find North Camden's Holy Name Church. Also located there in past years were Daly's Cafe, Ann's Tavern, and the Standard Movie Theater, also known as the North Camden Theater. Interesting people who have lived on Vine Street over the years include John Francis "Pop" Daly, and the brothers Theodore T. and Edward K. Cornelius. |

Operated for many years by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Cooper's Point, or Vine Street Ferry operated between Camden and Philadelphia. The Ferry was able to remain profitable even with competition from three other ferries in Camden, but the opening of the Delaware River Bridge brought a quick end to the service. The last run of the ferry was made on October 31, 1926, only a few months after the opening of the then new bridge. The top photo dates from the 1890s. Charles S. Wolverton was the superintendent of the ferry for many years, retiring when it closed, His son, Charles A. Wolverton, represented Camden in the United States House of Representatives for 32 years |

Where a playground now stands at the "point" created by the intersection of Vine & Main Streets, James F. Walton traded as "Walton the Plumber" prior to his death in 1927. He was eventually succeeded by Taggart & Green, plumbers. At 208 Vine, the next building, with doors and signs on both sides, was the Chin Bock Suey Chinese laundry. The photo dates from the early 1940s, when Taggart & Green's office served as Civil Defense station for Air Raid Wardens in the area. Click on Image to Enlarge |

Open Letter to Congressmen Concerning Ludlow Bill To the Editor: Sir-Following is an open letter to the representatives of the United States in Congress. Dear Mr. Representatives.: Do you, Mr. Representative, recognize that supreme sense of duty is ultimately a worshipped reserve, obvious to all the American people and that through their choosing they bestow upon your honor a reasonable obligation? In-so-far as the 72 percent petition to debate the Ludlow Bill upon the floor, is it not but the voters prerogative to feel, disappointed visioning a depleted political defense? The American opinion goes begging for action as they might feel another “Panay" coming on. Hoping the Ludlow Bill comes through the American way. J. ENGELKE |
