Westfield Avenue

WESTFIELD AVENUE was officially known as the Westfield and Camden Turnpike was more popularly known as the Burlington Turnpike. Another one of the old privately built and maintained, it was purchased by local government in May of 1904 for a cost of over $32,000 in response to protests of the citizenry over paying tolls for roads that were not kept in a well-maintained state. Other streets in present-day Camden that were taken over by government around this time included the White Horse Pike (1893), Mount Ephraim Avenue, Marlton Avenue (1907), Haddon Avenue (1909), and Federal Street (1913).

Westfield Avenue had been a toll road. The only tollgate on Westfield Avenue within the city limits of Camden was at 36th Street.

In 1936 the Public Works Administration erected Westfield Acres, Camden's first public housing project. The first tenants moved in during the spring of 1938. Westfield Acres was demolished to make way for the new Baldwin's Run homes in 2000. The new community welcomed its first residents in the spring of 2003.

Do you have a Westfield Avenue memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

This picture was shot at George Schuck’s farm in Moorestown. Since I was a Bear Scout this was taken in 1957. They are Camden Kids from around 36th Street. Mom, Dorothy R Huber, was the Den Mother. Mom retired as a teacher from Woodrow Wilson but also taught at Camden High School both in the 60s and 70s. Kenneth Klegg was Pack Master and he flew in an EC-121s over Vietnam in the early 1950s before anyone knew about Vietnam.

From left to right: Me: Paul G Huber CPA; Dale Jacobs, Mercenary Chopper Pilot; Gary Peze, Pennsauken Realtor; Rick Peze: Retired Army Warrant Officer; Gen Felch, Air Cond & Refrigeration Proprietor; Bernie Kofoet, President, Elmco Two, Inc. in Cramer Hill; Newlin Schoener, school principal; and Mr. George Schuck. They are all Veterans except Newlin Schoener. Five of us served in South East Asia.

My mother told me there were orchards around the left side of the house. There was no street on the right side of the house where Dudley St. is now. This area of Camden was called Stockton back in 1894, when my Grandmother was born there. But you probably knew that. Mom said she used to play tag running around the bushes in the front yard. The yard is significantly cut back because of the enlargement of the street. There were a number of barns in the back. All that is left now is one medium sized out-building that is used as a garage.

He's Trying to Trip You Up, Mr. Meves

To the Editor:

Sir-Will someone please tell Mr. Meves that selective breeding of the mind is impossible. '

Suppose we are a product of evolution. Just what would Mr. Meves' have us evolve to instead of human beings?

Mr. Meves would have us believe the unintelligent majority elected Mr. Roosevelt. Who elected Mr. Hoover, the intelligent minority?

HUSBAND, WOMAN HELD ON CHARGE WIFE MAKES

Mrs. Bessie A. Gaunt, of 4115 Westfield Avenue, yesterday appeared in police court and charged her husband, Emerson Gaunt, 32, of 840 Pearl Street, and Mrs. Nellie Olsen, 33, of 408 North Seventh Street, with misconduct.

The Gaunts have been estranged for some four years. Mrs. Gaunt told Police Judge Pancoast she had been keeping her husband under surveillance of late and on May 15, followed him to the Olsen home. Mrs. Gaunt said she parked her car near the house and saw her husband enter.

Detective John Trout and Walter Smith arrested both Gaunt and Mrs. Olsen in the latter's house at 8 p. m. on May 30.

Judge Pancoast held Gaunt and Mrs. Olsen in $500 bail each for the grand jury.

Reminds me of when I first rode my bike (about 1949) out to the end of Westfield Avenue past Cove Road, and caught the view of Crescent Boulevard... then New Jersey Route 25.... sweeping past the diner and heading North to who knew what adventures. The view was just breathtaking; dual lanes in both directions with wide grass islands for medians.
