Washington Street

WASHINGTON STREET was named after George Washington. When originally laid out, Washington Street east of Broadway was known as Morris Street, in honor of Robert Morris, the New Jersey financier who obtained funding for America’s forces during the Revolutionary war. In 1882, to avoid confusion, the name of Morris street was dropped, and the street became Washington Street for its entire length. Similar adjustments were made for Berkeley Street and Clinton Street.

Do you have a Washington Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.
