Deadly fire in Camden on Thurman St.

Two people were killed in a fire at 1040 Thurman Street in Camden, according to police officials.

Camden Chief Scott Thomson said police are investigating the fire as an arson.
Thomson declined to release information about the victims pending notification to the family.

"We're still getting to the bottom of exactly what happened here," Thomson said.

Local pastor David King said he talked with the grandfather of one of the victims this morning.

"Right now the whole family is in a lot of shock," he said. "It's messed up to wake up and find out your family is dead."s.

Tony Locantore, 20, of 314 Walnut Street, received a premature Christmas present from Judge Shay when he pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Jennie Balassia, 16, of 576 Walnut Street. He was sent to jail and Judge Shay instructed the sheriff to release him on December 24.

Another Christmas present was handed out to Mrs. Mary Bieliniski, of 1041 Thurman Street, who was convicted of violating the child welfare act. The complaint was made by Mrs. Louise F. Walsh, secretary of the S. P. C. C., who charged that on September 19 the woman became intoxicated and brutally beat her seven children and put them into the streets. The children range in ages from two to 14 years. When Mrs. Walsh visited the house, she said, Mrs. Bieliniski threw a lamp at her. She also will be released from the county jail on December 24.

During the afternoon two raids were staged by Sergeant John Gilbert and Policemen Warner and Branch resulting in the arrest of two men and seizure of a still and a small quantity of alleged liquor.

At the home of Stanley Saposki, 46, of 1066 Thurman Street, the raiders said they found a 25-gallon still, three gallons of “moonshine” and a complete set of coils. Saposki was arrested and later released under $500 bail.

Only a half-gallon of alleged liquor was found in the home of Frank Beuclawski, 60, of 1422 Mount Ephraim Avenue, who likewise was arrested, then released under $5000 bail.

QUIT BY NAGGING WIFE, MAN WINS DECREE HERE

A man deserted by his wife who took with her their six-year-old child—and a woman told by her husband to get a job and support their son—these two were in Camden divorce court yesterday. Their suits were not contested.

Allen Stokes testified before Advisory Master Linwood Erickson that his wife, Vera, whom he married in November, 1930, left him five years later. He lives at 210 Powell street, Gloucester.

"She went to Philadelphia with our daughter, Miriam, who is six, and she wouldn't come back," he said. "Though she nagged me all the time, I did try to persuade her to return." Divorce was recommended.

Decision was reserved in the suit of Mrs. Martha Scully of 1089 Thurman street against her husband, Henry, of 205 Carpenter street.

"He told me he never had any money for me because he had spent it treating his friends," Mrs. Scully testified. Then he left and never came back." The son, Robert, is now 14.
