Mt. Ephraim Avenue

Mt. Ephraim Avenue goes back as far as 1878, when it was a toll road called the Mount Ephraim Turnpike. Originally beginning at the intersection of Line Street and Haddon Avenue, at some point between 1929 and 1946 Starr Avenue was renamed, resulting in a second section of Mount Ephraim Avenue running parallel to Newton Avenue and extending out to Admiral Wilson Boulevard, along the west side of the old Sears-Roebuck building.

This is a picture of my grandparent's store when they first bought it - circa late 1920s - 1524 Mt. Ephraim Avenue. My grand- parents were Jacob and Anna Dyl, who emigrated here from Poland. The store was later owned by my parents, Edmund and Jennie Dyl Ruchalski. Some of the items sold in our store were cigarettes, cigars, tobacco, pipes, candy, soda, ice cream, newspapers. I grew up in this house. The Liberty Theater was on the next block, and the kids would
stop in our store to buy penny candy on their way to the movies on Saturday afternoons. The store was later owned by my parents, Edmund & Jennie Dyl Ruchalski.

Camden Residents Warned of Fumes

(AP) State environmental officials were taking air samples in the aftermath of a fire that leveled a large lawn and garden center here, according to police and fire authorities.

Officials warned residents to remain indoors because of fears about possible toxic fumes from the fire at Gaudio's, a longtime city establishment.

''We were mostly concerned about the fertilizer in there and the chlorine they sell for swimming pools,'' Fire Chief Theodore Primas said. ''We just didn't know what level of toxicity there was,'' he said.

LIBERMAN DISCHARGES 2 HELD IN RING THEFTS Charged with stealing seven diamond rings valued at $4000, two men were discharged by Police Judge Lewis Liberman yesterday when the complaining witness failed to appear in court. John Burke, 42, of 736 Berkley Street, and John Bryan, 31, of 3009 Mt. Ephraim avenue, were arrested on complaint of Mrs. Anna Ricco, of 40 Terrace avenue, who accused them of taking her jewelry during a party on February 18.
