Farragut
avenue

FARRAGUT AVENUE in Cramer Hill runs north from North 29th street along the Delaware River to North 36th Street. The avenue was named after Civil War hero Admiral David G. Farragut, who won great victories for the Union at Mobile Bay and New Orleans.

Do you have an Farragut Avenue memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

Residents Protest Spilling of Sewage Water in Street

East Camden residents in the 3200 block on Farragut Avenue. protested to city health authorities today the spilling of several thousand gallons of sewage water into the street.

'The water was pumped from the grit chamber of the eastside disposal plant. opposite the homes, and caused pools four feet deep, residents claimed.

Frank Gondolf, city superintendant of sewers, blamed it on the oversight of an employee who failed to shut down a pump being tested.

He explained they planned to empty the grit chamber into the by-pass leading into the Delaware River. He said he ordered the pump tested while he went for a fitting to complete the connection. During the interim, the pump was draining the waste water onto a plant driveway 10 minutes, he said. It spilled into the street from the driveway.

Complaints were voiced Mrs. Margaret Scharr, mother of nine children, of 3226 Farragut Avenue, who said it was impossible to keep neighborhood children from playing around the puddles, and by Fred Cassidy, 3230 Farragut Avenue, who stated:

"It smells terrible. The City tells us to cut the grass around our homes and keep our properties clean and then they spill this filthy water on our street."

Gondolf said the puddles will be cleared and lime spread over the street, which is unpaved.

Margaret Fritschie & Tiffany Carroll
December 1991

These are pictures from my Grandmother, Margaret Fritschie's house 3230 Farragut Avenue, on the corner of Bergen and Farragut Avenues. They lived in Ablett Village until my mom was in her early 20's. Then moved in with my maternal Grandfather, Frederick Cassidy. A little bit about the house: The story of this house is that my Grandfather's mother put a hex on the house because she did not approve of him dating my grandmother. The house had all types of problems and was believed to be haunted. In the early 90's, it caught fire while no one was home and burnt to the ground. My grandmother believed it was the hex. My mother believed it was the wrong doing of my uncle Bill's drug dealers that he never paid. Neither were ever proved. The house is still an empty lot to this day.
