DRIVER OF TRUCK HELD AFTER BEER IS SEIZED Arrested on a federal charge of transporting and possession of beer, John Grost, 39, of 1603 Norris Street, was committed to jail without bail for a hearing before U. S. Commissioner Wynn Armstrong today. The truck driven by Grost was stopped at Collings Road and the Black Horse pike by police, who found three half barrels of beer. In the machine with Grost was Bruno Skalowski, 16, of 1057 Everett Street, who was held as a material witness. CALLS THE CONGRESSMAN To the Editor: Sir-Will you kindly find space in the columns of the Mail Bag for the attached letter: To my fellow delegates and Congressmen: Being rather lazy and reluctant to write all the delegates and congressmen of the Congress of Civic Associations and having this valuable medium whereby one letter will reach all as well as giving the publicity we always strove for in the days of the congress, it is my desire to reminisce with you of those good days when our congress was feared by every politician. For one, I am sorry that there exists no longer the congress. I sure did enjoy hearing you, Frank, and you, Clarence, as well as the rest of us, on the commission floor "bawling out" our city fathers. We'd have to arrange that a little different now, for it would be awkward for you, Frank, to get down from the commissioner's chair to the floor to raise the devil with the other commissioners because they made the taxes go up. Clarence could not very well attend the meetings to criticize the city government, at least so long as he is on city's time. But be that as it may, perhaps it can be arranged through another congress, where we could make all the plans for our bi-monthly show at every commission meeting. LEON S. MAN IN ROW JAILED An argument over a pushcart in which a man was severely beaten on the head and face resulted in Joseph Dworanczyk, 29, of 1155 Lowell Street, being sent to jail far four months in police court yesterday. With his left eye badly blackened and his face cut and swollen to almost twice its usual size, Simon Balicyck, 55, of 1065 Everett Street, told Police Judge Pancoast that Dworanczyk beat him with a board. He laid that the attack occurred at Farnham Park when he refused to give Dworanczyk his pushcart. PARK BOARD IS SUED FOR DAMAGES BY WOMAN The Camden County Park Commission is named defendant in a damage suit for $11,000 filed yesterday in the office of County Clerk Charles F. Wise by Linda D. Capewell, 1271 Everett Street, and her husband William. Mrs. Capewell alleges that on June 21, 1931 she paid admission to the swimming pool in Farnham Park and that while getting dressed in the bathhouse she slipped on a piece of soap on the floor, suffering painful and permanent injuries. She is asking $10,000·and her husband $1000 for the loss of her services. 3 YOUTHS ACCUSED OF INTENDED THEFT Charged with loitering with intent to steal three Liberty Park youths will be given hearings in police court today. They are John Milena, 20, of 1244 Whitman avenue; John Malik, 15, of 1295 Everett street, and Edward Bukowski, 17, of 1507 Norris street. They were arrested by Detective George Zeitz. Elderly couple die after fire hits Camden home

An elderly couple died after a raging fire struck their two-story home in the 1300 block of Everett Street on Thursday night, a city fire chief said.

The one-alarm blaze was reported by a neighbor at 9:57 p.m. and was not under control until 10:37 p.m., Camden County emergency dispatch said.

By then, 85-year-old Levota Macklin, who jumped out of a second-floor window, was critically hurt with head injuries. She later died at Cooper University Hospital, city Deputy Chief Paul Price said.

Her husband, 84-year-old William Macklin, died in the blaze, Price said.

The two were married for 37 years.

Their stepson, 65-year-old Lawrence Thomas, was treated and released from Cooper Hospital for respiratory injuries and burns.

This morning outside the house, Thomas, with tears in his eyes, recounted he was in his bedroom on the second floor last night, with the door closed, watching television, when the TV suddenly went off. He said he opened the door partially but was hit by heat and smoke that were so intense he couldn't open the door all the way.

He went out onto the roof in the back of the second floor through a bathroom window and hung off the roof, he said.

"I heard him stumbling around in his room," Thomas said, speaking of his stepfather. "I hollered, 'Get out, get out, fire, fire.' "

Two neighborhood children helped Thomas get off the roof before firefighters arrived, the retired truck driver said. Flames were shooting out of the side of the house by the time he got to the ground, he said.

The Macklins' 67-year-old stepson Carl Thomas, also stood outside the house this morning, staring up at the burned out window frames on the second floor of the brick structure, tears in his eyes. The three had lived in the house since 1983.

"My parents were God-fearing people. I don't know what else to say," Thomas said. "God doesn't do any wrong. . . . Now she's with God."

He said his mother could barely walk and used a cane or walker for help. He said he was amazed she got out of the window.

The Macklins' nephew, 41-year-old Rodney Miles of Camden, also stopped at the house this morning, looking at the property, the only house on a block of tree-filled lots, and shaking his head.

"I'm still numb about it," Miles said. "I can't make sense of it, especially those two. It's crazy for something like this to happen. With everything going on, you think that God would take someone else and not these two."

Meanwhile, the investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing, the deputy fire chief said.

"There was a lot of fire; the house was very heavily involved when we got there," Price said this morning.

Lawrence Thomas said the house had smoke alarms but they weren't hooked up correctly and didn't sound Thursday night.

Also this morning, a woman returned to the site of the burned home, where she learned about the fire last night.

"That was my mom's best girlfriend," said Linda Battle, 48, who lives with her mother in Camden. "Now I have to go around the corner and tell her she's gone."

Couple was united in life and death

When William and Levota Macklin met and married nearly 40 years ago, it was the second time around for both.

Nine children between them, they built a lasting home, as their children describe it, "and a lasting love."

"We loved each other," says Levota Macklin's son, Carl Thomas Jr., of his step-siblings. "We don't even speak of each other as stepchildren. We speak of family . . . We were all united."

United behind a pair of soul mates who died together in an October fire at their Camden home. Levota Macklin was 85; William Macklin was 84.

As a child, Levota Thomas earned the nickname "Candy" because of her penchant for the treats sold in her mother's Camden store. A city native, she was born at Cooper Hospital, where she worked for 28 years, and where she died of massive injuries after jumping from a second-floor window in her burning home.

"She was a dedicated employee," Thomas said. "Whenever they wanted anything done the right way, they made sure they got Levota to do it."

William R.D. Macklin, known as Mack, was a product of West Virginia coal country, where he learned the values of hard work and endurance. He moved to Camden after his first marriage ended, and met his second wife in 1967. He was employed in security at Classic Cars of Cherry Hill.

William Macklin's youngest son, Alvin, said of his father, "You could not ask for a finer man." And he can hardly remember a time when Candy, as he calls his stepmother, was not in his life.

"She was a beautiful woman," said the Fredericksburg, Va., resident, who was with his father and stepmother on the last day of their lives.

"Not only was she physically beautiful, but she made an effort to make people happy."

In their private lives, the couple enjoyed long car rides to visit relatives, as well as meals at Collingswood Diner. But their commitment was to church and family. They were longtime members of the First Nazarene Baptist Church in Camden.

"They were very, very church-oriented," Thomas said. "I don't think my mother missed too much church at all. They were just good, God-fearing people."

And while William Macklin kept West Virginia in his heart, he was as devoted as Levota Macklin was to Camden. Despite the city's slide, the Macklins stayed, in an Everett Street house Thomas described as the kind of grandiose structure they don't make anymore.

"Camden was their home," he said. "They had been there all their lives together, and she was born there . . . He being her soul mate, anything she wanted, he was right there with her."

While he initially escaped the fire, William Macklin ran back in for his wife, not knowing she had jumped.

He died of smoke inhalation.

Earlier in the day, Alvin Macklin had a revealing conversation with his father on the way home from their day trip to Atlantic City.

"My father told me, "You know, I've made a lot of mistakes in my life . . . but my life has changed and I am happy with my life today.' " Alvin Macklin recalled. "And I just looked at him."

Alvin Macklin got a cell phone call about the fire before he could even make it back to Virginia. It did not surprise him to learn his father had gone back into the house for his wife.

Earlier that morning at breakfast, he recalls, his stepmother jokingly said of her marriage, "Don't nobody want him but me, and nobody want me but him."

Later, as she lay dying, Alvin Thomas thought to himself, "Lord, don't let this woman wake up and find out Bill is gone."

One month later, facing the first Thanksgiving without their parents, Carl Thomas and his siblings turned to their rock solid faith.

While fire devastated that grand Camden house and took the Macklins' lives, their children sincerely believe they now have another home: a mansion built by God..
