BARING
STREET runs for one block south of Chestnut Street to
Kaighn Avenue, between Broadway and South 6th Street. The houses on
Baring Street were built in 1888 by Wilson
Ernst, who was
active as a builder
in Camden in the 1880s. In the late 1880s Ernst had offices on
Benson Street above 4th Street and at 521 Kaighn Avenue. In
1886 George Reeser Prowell wrote, in his History of Camden County New
Jersey that "Wilson Ernst has been actively engaged since 1876 and
about four hundred buildings, chiefly dwellings, attest to his
enterprise." Prowell cited Ernst as one of the three most active
builders in Camden at the time. |

The funeral of John Thompson, who died on Wednesday, was held at 2:00 this afternoon from the home of his son-in-law, Horace Bell, 1100 Baring Street. Score of floral designs were in evidence, a mute tribute to the deceased man. Mr. Thompson, who was 79 years of age, had been a resident of the Sixth Ward for more than thirty years. He formerly conducted a flourishing grocery business at Baring and Chestnut Streets. Failing health was responsible for his retirement. |

1104 Baring Street 1897-1900 My great-great-grandfather, William Heineman (bottom left) and some of his companions at an un-named railroad crossing in Camden, circa 1890s. I have two others of him, dated 1894. In one he is doing some caulking on top of a water tower, and the other, some smithy work, presumably at the same water tower construction site. The location is not named and it's been driving me nuts trying to find the location via the buildings visible in the distance. Jeff

Marcus Cabnet "was the city's schochet (ritual slaughterer) who was described to me as the 'right hand man' of Rabbi Riff of Sons of Israel." "Municipal "Judge Sklar owned an office building on Market Street where my uncle [attorney] George Cabnet had an office. Uncle George also owned a lunchenette "the Round Up' on the same block as the old Savar Theater. His wife (my father's sister) started a kosher catering business that is still around: Miriam G. Cabnet." Louis
