Twenty-Third
Street

TWENTY-THIRD STREET begins in what was originally called the Pavonia section of what is now considered Cramer Hill and ends in East Camden at Federal Street. The street had already been laid out by the time the 1887-1888 Camden City Directory was published. The street begins at Harrison Avenue and runs south, across River Road to the Pavonia railroad switching yard, then from Howell Street to Federal Street

Do you have a Twenty-Third Street memory or picture? Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI,
CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR

July 13, 2004

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Acting Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa reported today that Groucho M. Keyes, M/52, has been charged with Murdering two people found dead on July 8, 2004, in a home in Camden, N.J.

Keyes is charged with killing his uncle, Samuel Harris, 64, and Harris' live-in girlfriend, Linda Neely, 55, on the evening of July 7, 2004, in the home the victims shared with Keys in the 1100 block of North 23rd Street.

Harris' body was found at approximately 8 a.m. on July 8 in the basement of the house. A family member went to visit him, found the body and called police. An autopsy by the Camden County Medical Examiner determined Harris died as a result of multiple stab and chop wounds to the head, neck and torso.

Later that same day, investigators discovered Linda Neely's body, which had been concealed in another part of the house. An autopsy determined Neely died from multiple blunt trauma wounds to the head.

It is alleged that after Keyes killed the two victims, he took Harris' vehicle, a 1994 Chrysler LeBaron, and used Neely's ATM card to obtain cash.

Keyes remains under police guard at Cooper University Hospital recovering from gunshot wounds he sustained on July 9, 2004, during a confrontation with police.

My father, Korean war vet Bruce Fortin Smith bought our first home at 983 North 23rd Street in 1958. It was a great neigh- borhood to grow up, always safe. We played ball from "tele pole to tele pole" in the street. Our neighbors at 989, the Petre family and 981 the Hans family. The Stutzenbergs were across the street. We left in 1962. Lou's Grocery Store was on the corner of River and 23rd on our block.
