WALTER N. READ was born in Camden NJ. His father, William T. Read Jr., was prominent in Camden as a lawyer and banker, and had served as New Jersey's State Treasurer and as a State Senator. His grandfather, William T. Read, had been prominent in insurance and real estate, and his grandmother, Lucretia S. Read, had been, among other things,  President of the Board of Managers of the Camden Home for Friendless Children. His brother Dr. William T. Read served for many years as the Camden County Medical Examiner. 

Walter N. Read became a partner in one of southern New Jersey's most prominent law firms, the Haddonfield based as Archer, Greiner & Read. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania law school, Family members recalled that in 1941 he took his last exam at Penn on a Friday and enlisted in the Navy that Saturday. Walter N. Read served on the N.J. Casino Control Commission from 1983 through 1989. He also served as president of the Camden and New Jersey bar associations. Walter N. Read died at the age 83 on December 22, 2000. The Cinnaminson resident had cancer.
