WALTER
BAKER SR. and his wife Lillian C. Baker a large family in North
Camden. He was born at Bordentown, New Jersey on February 3,
1888. His mother Sue, was a widow by the summer of 1900. She
worked as a "shirt operator" when the census was taken
that year. Young Walter, then 12, was still in school. They
lived at 4 Willow Street in Bordentown.
By
1910 Walter Baker and his mother had moved to 703 Federal
Street in Camden. Walter was working as an assistant foreman
at a harness dressing concern. His mother operated a
boardinghouse at the address. Walter Baker married not long
after the 1910 Census was taken.
Walter
Baker's World War I draft card states that he was living at 20 Haddon
Avenue and working as a shipping clerk, a trade he followed
much of his working life. He then worked for the R.M.
Hollingshead Company.

The
1920 and the 1930 Census shows the Baker family living at 938
Lawrence Street in North
Camden. The 1930 Census shows four Baker children at home,
Elizabeth, Margaret, Walter Jr. and Lillian.
When
he registered for the draft in 1942, Walter Baker and his family
lived at 207 North 9th Street. The family had moved to 523 Elm
Street by 1947.
Walter
Baker passed away in November of 1964.
Walter
Baker's daughter Elizabeth "Betty" Baker married Bill
"Yogi" Flemming. Mr. and Mrs. Flemming and Walter
Baker Jr. and his wife Evelyn both moved to Cramer
Hill, where
they bought homes at 1124 and 1125 Lois
Avenue, respectively. Daughter Lillian Baker married Rocco
Nasuti. All three men became active during the 1950s and
1960s with the Cramer Hill Boys Club.
