Thomas
Stammerjohann

THOMAS STAMMERJOHANN was born on March 16, 1940 to George and Herthe Stammerjohann in Camden, New Jersey. The Stammerjohanns had emigrated to the United States from Germany, husband George coming first, possibly as a member of a ship's crew in 1929. Herthe joined her husband in the summer of 1930, emigrating on June 27, 1930 from Hamburg aboard the steamship Deutschland, arriving in New York on July 8, 1930. George Stammerjohann was then living at 1231 Dayton Street in Camden's Whitman Park neighborhood. The family spent some time in South Carolina, where a son, George Jr., was born. They had returned to Camden in 1935. George Stammerjohann found work as a toolmaker at the Radio Corporation of America factory. George and Herthe Stammerjohann and family were active in the Frohsinn Singing Society, one of the many ethnic social clubs in Camden.

The 1940 Census, taken on April 15, shows the Stammerjohann family living at 1244 Dayton Street. Camden Fire Department member Stephen Szwak then lived at 1238 Dayton Street, while Camden policeman William E.  Brickner lived next door at 1246 Dayton Street. The Stammerjohann family was still at 1244 Dayton as late as 1947. By 1956 they had moved to 1382 Whitman Avenue, where they remained as late as October of 1959.

After serving in the United Sates Navy from September 30, 1958 to September 15, 1957 Thomas Stammerjohann worked at various jobs,

including a time at the K&K Model Company and the Owings-Corning corporation fiberglass plant. He was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on January 15, 1963 and reported for duty the following day. He served with distinction for over 35 years, many of them as a Captain at Engine Company 3 in the 1800 block of Broadway. Thomas Stammerjohann retired from the Camden Fire Department on June 30, 1998.

Thomas Stammerjohann was single at the time of his appointment to the Camden Fire Department. By the fall of 1970 he and wife Patricia were living at 634 North 32nd Street in East Camden, where they remained as late as 1980. By 1997 they had moved to Wenonah, New Jersey.

Last a resident of Sicklerville, New Jersey, Thomas Stammerjohnann passed away on April 8, 2015. He was survived by his children Thomas J., Bonnie, and Robert M. Stammerjohann, their spouses, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
