MICHAEL McCAFFREY was born in Camden NJ, at South 2nd Street and Taylor Avenue, to Bridget and John McCaffrey, according to the 1900 Census in May of 1862. His father was one of the early members of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which later was renamed Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and was employed in digging the foundations for the church, which is located at Broadway and Market street. The 1880 Census shows the family, which included eight other children besides Michael, living at 831 Mt. Vernon Street in South Camden, Michael McCaffrey married his wife Anna when they were both 19. By 1900 there were four children, John, Thomas, Marie, and Beatrice. The 1887-1888 Camden City Directory shows Michael McCaffrey at 1109 Sycamore Street. He moved to 815 Carpenter Street the following year. The McCaffrey's remained at that address through 1910. He was employed for many years as a cloth weaver at Camden Woolen Mills, and was one of North Camden's best known citizens. Michael and Anna McCaffrey later moved to 732 Pearl Street, sharing a home with their daughter Beatrice and her husband, Frederick Paul. When the Census was taken in April of 1930, Michael McCaffrey was working as a watchman at one of Camden's many shipyards. Michael McCaffrey passed away at his home at 732 Pearl Street on March 31, 1942, at the age of 83. Besides being a long standing member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Michael McCaffrey was for over 60 years a member of the Irish fraternal organization known as the Ancient Order of Hibernians, |
