MICHAEL
H. LINDSAY was born in Scotland in July of 1847. According to
the 1900 Census, he came to America in 1860. He married in 1870
and lived in Pennsylvania through at least December of 1879,
when daughter Frances "Fannie" Lindsay was born. The
Lindsay family, which included older children Josie, Willie, and
Maggie moved to Camden shortly after Fannie's birth. By June of
1880 the family had settled at 908 South 4th Street in South
Camden, where they remained through the summer of 1910. A
painter by trade, Michael Lindsay involved himself in local
politics, which resulted in his appointment on March 27, 1883 to the Camden Fire Department
to serve as a Driver, most likely with Engine
Company 1. Michael Lindsay served with the Fire Department for
one year.

Michael
Lindsay and his family are listed in the 1900 Census at the Spruce
Street address. By this time Martha Lindsay had given birth to nine
children, six of whom were living. Three of the Lindsay children
were living at home, Fannie, 21; Edward, 14; and Harry, 10. When
the Census was taken in 1910, six children were still living, but
only Edward and Harry were still with their parents on Spruce
Street.
The
1914 Camden City Directory shows Michael and Martha Lindsay living
at 619 West Street with their sons William and Edward. It appears
that by the time the 1918-1919 Camden City Directory was compiled,
both Michael and Martha Lindsay had passed away. Neither appear in
the Directory or in the January 1920 Census.
