JOHN C. CLEARY was born early in 1940 to Lawrence Clifford Cleary and his wife the former and Dorothy Viola Winkler. The 1940 Census shows the family, which included older siblings Lawrence G. "Larry", Dorothy, and Teresa living at 532 South 7th Street in Camden. The elder Cleary was working as a laborer for the W.P.A. at the time of the Census. Another child, James R. Cleary, was born in 1941.

John C. Cleary served in the United States Marine Corps prior to being appointed to the Camden Police Department in 1962, eventually rising to the rank of Detective. He served the City faithfully for 26 years and 6 months, retiring on pension on June 1, 1989. His last years were spent in Cape May County, New Jersey. John C. Cleary died November 20, 2015.

John C. Cleary (1940-2015)

AGE: 75 Cape May Court House formerly of Camden

On November 20, 2015. Survived by his loving lifetime partner Carol E. Walsh. He was the devoted father of John C. Cleary, Jr., Dennis M. Cleary and Gary B. Cleary, brother of Dorothy Flemming and Teresa Brecht and adoring grandfather of Lauren, Kristen, Gary Jr. and Carmen and great-grandfather of Lyla, also survived by nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Mr. Cleary served in the Marines and was a retired Detective from the Camden City Police Dept. Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing, beginning Monday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 PM and on Tuesday morning from 10:00 AM - 12 Noon from the Stephenson-Brown Funeral Home, 33 W. Maple Avenue, Merchantville, NJ. Services and Interment are Private. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
