DR. ERNEST REED HIRST was born in Camden NJ in 1891 to Levi B. Hirst and his wife, the former Annisteen Reed. The family lived at 592 Federal Street, the corner of Federal Street and Haddon Avenue, where his father owned a pharmacy. Levi B. Hirst was studying medicine at the time and in 1894 received his doctorate from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. By 1906 Dr. Levi B. Hirst had moved his family to 586 Federal Street, where he practiced medicine. He kept his pharmacy through at least 1906. E. Reed Hirst graduated from Camden Manual Training and High School in 1912. Following in his fathers footsteps, he went into medicine, graduating from Jefferson Medical College in 1918. He interned at Cooper Hospital. He, like his father, specialized in otolaryngology. He was affiliated with both Cooper Hospital in Camden and Zurbrugg Memorial Hospital in Riverside NJ. His practiced medicine with his father, first at 586 Federal Street, and in the late 1920s and 1930s, at 634 Federal Street. Dr. E. Reed Hirst married Magdalena Winter. The couple had two children, Annasteen A. and E. Reed Hirst Jr. The 1924 City Directory shows the Hirst family at 1422 Belleview Avenue in Parkside. By 1929 Dr. Hirst and his family had left Camden for Haddonfield. He continued to practice medicine with his father at 634 Federal Street. Dr. Levi B. Hirst died in 1935. Dr. E. Reed Hirst passed away in 1944. Dr. E. Reed Hirst was a member of the Camden County Medical Society, the Camden City Medical Society, as well as being a member of the American Medical Association. |
