Rear
Admiral Donald (Swabby) Hann is a native of Stratford NJ. He
attended both Riverside Military Academy, Gainesville, GA and
Virginia Military Academy (VMI) Lexington VA. He enlisted in the
USCG and was sent to the Coast Guard Training Center, Cape May,
NJ in July 1956. He graduated as a Seamen Apprentice and was
sent to the Coast Guard Training Center, Groton, CT. Six months
later he graduated from Radio School with the rank of RM3. He
was assigned to the USCGC Aurora berthed in Savannah, GA. Next
assignment was to the USCGC Ariadne, Key West FL. He was
promoted to RM2 and transferred to the USCGC Mendota in
Wilmington, NC. His next promotion to RM1 came while he was
aboard |
the
Mendota. Due to several commendations he was promoted to RMC and
transferred to the Coast Guard Primary Radio Station 5th
District (NMN) at Norfolk/Oceania VA. After a very short
duration he was transferred back to sea on the USCGC Chilula
berthed out of Morehead City NC. Here he was honorably
discharged in order that he attend Drexel Institute of
Technology, Philadelphia PA. He was transferred to the Coast
Guard Reserve with the rank of Warrant Officer. He graduated
from now - Drexel University, with a BS in Business
Administration. He continued on to obtain a MS Degree at Drexel
in Computer Science. He was promoted to CWO3. When he completed
his MS Degree he attended University of Pennsylvania, Wharton
School of Business where he obtained his PhD in Computer
Science. He at that time held the rank of CWO4.Next he was
activated into the Regular Service and attend Officer Candidate
School (OCS) at the Coast Guard Academy, New London CT. He
graduated as a LT (0-3) and was assigned back on the “Old Rust
Bucket” - USCGC Mendota berthed at Wilmington NC. Next he was
transferred to another “Old Rust Bucket” - USCGC Absecon
berthed in Norfolk VA. as her Captain at the rank of LCMD
(0-4).He next attended the Navy War College at Portsmouth, RI
and graduated at the top of his class. He then served two 6
month - consecutive tours, as an Instructor at the Naval War
College. His specialty was Admiral Nelson’s defeat of the
combined fleets of both France & Spain at Trafalgar on the
Nile. He converted Admiral Nelson’s crossing of the T into
land guerrilla attacks. He was promoted to the rank of CMD
(0-5).His next and last sea command was the USCGC Chase a
replacement for one of the “Old Rust Buckets“. He was a full
Captain (0-6). After delivering the Chase for Vietnam Duty. He
was replaced in order to command a number of Secret OPS
Missions. He served three one year tours in Vietnam. One year in
the beginning, One year in the middle. One year at the very end.
He was promoted to Rear Admiral L/H (0-7) reporting to the Coast
Guard Commandant for the purpose of Designing and Implementation
of a Pilot Computer System for the Seventh Coast Guard District
and was located at the Coast Guard Air Station in Miami FL. When
the Computer System was completed he was promoted to his present
rank of Rear Admiral U/H (0-8) and was responsible for the
Implementation of the Pilot Computer System into all remaining
Coast Guard Districts. His last command was the Commander of the
Fifth Coast Guard District , Portsmouth, VA. where he was
discharged after 30 years of Service. |
