CHARLES SEXTON was born in Jacobstown, in Burlington County. He came to Camden NJ in 1924, first working for Isaac Cole as a coach-trimmer, and later in the car shops of the Camden & Amboy Railroad in Bordentown NJ. An ordained Baptist Minister, he preached all over the state, and was instrumental in the founding of several churches.

Charles Sexton became involved in local politics, and was elected to city council in 1845. In 1849 he was elected mayor, defeating journalist Charles D. Hineline. He was re-elected in 1850. He left the Mayor's office in 1851, succeeded by Lorenzo F. Fisler.

Charles Sexton passed away in 1883.
