On this page you will find the new and updated web-pages on www.dvrbs.com. I think regular visitors to this site, which I hope you are or will be, will find this page useful. I add pages just about every day!

On February 19, 2006 I completed a 4 week long project of reorganizing the website. If I told you that this has taken almost every non-day job hour since January 24th, I would not be all that far from the truth.... my dogs are looking at me with great impatience in their eyes!

As the site had to be split into a number of sub-webs to make editing and updating more feasible, I literally had to go page by page to check that links between pages in different sub-webs would work. Hopefully I got them all. Of course links to other web-sites are beyond control, but the stuff within www.dvrbs.com should all be working

On Wednesday October 4, 2006 the DVRBS.COM server crashed. I had to get a back-up server up to speed, which was accomplished late Thursday night. I did some more work on it Sunday night, after the Eagles game.

I anticipate the server may be down for an upgrade one more time during the month of October.

I moved in December of 2006. At that time the site was down for about 48 hours. It will be down again for routine maintenance to the server sometime in late Decemer 2006 or early 2007.

PLEASE REPORT ALL BROKEN LINKS TO ME BY E-MAIL

I'm cranking pages out, trying to do a little every day. Life has gotten busier lately, but I've made a lifetime commitment to this, so something gets done every day, and will continue to do so. Once again, It want to take a moment and thank all the people who have been so nice as to write and encourage me in this work. Your words of encouragement and the friendships made.... the good that's been and is being done here... are beyond measure. Also of course many thanks to those who have provided pictures and stories for the website, and of course those who have helped financially.

As I've stated earlier, microfilmed newspapers from the New Jersey State Archives cost $35.00 a roll, a roll containing a month of Evening Couriers or Morning Posts. I've acquired January through December of 1928, and have raised enough to purchase the first six months of 1929. I also actively acquire, whenever possible, actual original copies of any and all Camden newspapers from past times, photos, and other printed materials.

I will continue to accept donations towards the purchase of the microfilm reader-scanner and source materials. Donations can also be made towards rolls of microfilm, and the donor can decide what year and month of newspapers they would like to see obtained if they so desire.  DVRBS, Inc is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization and  tax-deductible donations can be made by check, money order, or via Paypal.

To donate by check or money order, make them payable to DVRBS Inc., and mail to PO Box 1466, Camden NJ 08105-0466.

Hello!!! We are still "in transit". The site was down for 2 days.... longer than I had anticipated, but it could have been a lot worse. all things considered. I'm still unpacking, that is a process that will go on for a while, and my furniture won't be moved till next week, still, I'm trying to make time to get some new items up. The one and only new page is a real winner, courtesy of Steve Ross, of the Ross Plumbing family. It's a block by block rundown of Kaighn Avenue from I'm thinking the 1930s and 1940s, and is not to be missed... it will bring back more than a few memories, I'm sure, and be very informative to we younger folk.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the passing of Bobby Dolan, longtime Police and Fire Dispatcher in Camden, an Auxiliary Fireman in the City and an all around good guy. I hope to have a page up about him started soon, and add a lot to it after the holidays.

Greetings! I've been moving things to my new residence after work and on weekends, so there is not a lot of new material. I hope to move the server over the next few days which means:

THE WEBSITE WILL BE DOWN FOR A FEW HOURS, MAYBE FOR A DAY OR SO

Fear not, it's only for a minute... as long as it takes to physically move the server, plug it in, and then for www.register.com to reassign the IP address for the new location www.dvrbs.com.

There are A LOT of new pictures up on the Krystal Lounge page, as I posted a bunch from my birthday party there back in 1996... about 20 pounds ago!

Dan Cooperson has a new book - My Friends Call Me Motts: The Long Journey From Camden, NJ to Singapore. I think you will enjoy this. I liked his last book, They Call Me Big Coop, a lot.

Camden History Night at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was great fun on Wednesday night. Barbara Thompson, who will be opening a new restaurant on the waterfront by the Aquarium was there, as was Judge Joseph Rodriguez, Father Michael Mannion, Mike McCracken, Joseph Borton, and radio personality Pat Delsi, who owned Camden's radio station WSSJ (I always think of it as WCAM) 1310 AM for many years.

November 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 & December 1, 2006

Hello!!

OK... the newlyweds are fine, there has been some illness in our extended family, so a lot of running back and forth, and Livia lost her Uncle, Robert Riccardi Sr., to cancer over the weekend. I'm also in the process of moving, boy that's fun- NOT!!!! Still managed to get a little something done, however.

This week Camden lost two of its finest, retired police officers Ed Eldred and Steve Quarles. Ed's wife and mine are co-workers, and Steve was a dear friend going back to 1990 when I first got into the music business in Camden. Both will be missed, but certainly not forgotten. Another fellow that I met in passing maybe once or twice that Camden lost was retired Camden fire fighter Edward F. Murtaugh, who was very active in veterans affairs over the last 15 years. Another great less. I would also be remiss if not noting the death of Tom Goldy, commander of Cherry Hill's American Legion post in recent years, a really good man who did a lot for veterans and his community.

Oh well. As Junior Walker sang in the song Roadrunner... you gotta keep on keeping on.

One very good thing.... I documented a Camden sailor who died while in service during World War II and who had gone unrecognized due to the Navy's policy of only recording combat related deaths on it's casualty list. Oscar Lee Ringo died in 1944 while serving in or near Alaska and is buried in the Sitka National Cemetery.

November 20, 21, 22, & 23, 2006

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!!!

As you can imagine, I've been pretty busy the last couple of weeks, still I do a little work each day. Two large projects have taken up a lot of time. One is a page about a Camden fellow named Ed Patterson, just an average guy from all appearances, who passed away last year. I'm hoping that some of his distant relatives or friends will find the page.

The other project is the Life and Work  on the  Delaware River page which contains the many images sent to the website by Dave Boone. This will probably take up most if my time for the next week or so. The images include many aerial shots, and are not to be missed... be sure to click on the to see supersized views, there are many that are very large and are high resolution.... very cool stuff!

Phil & Livia Get Married!

http://www.dvrbs.com/PMC/CamdenNJ-Wedding.htm

November 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, & 11, 2006

News, news, new........ a lot of news! Where to start?

#1 is pretty easy. Yours truly is getting married next week to Ms. Livia, that's Gigi's human for those of you who visit the Funky Dogs web-pages. No reception, but we will be barbecueing all spring and summer, so we'll see you then!

#2 This week I spent trying to catch up on A LOT of material that had been submitted but for one reason or another I hadn't gotten on to the site right away. Job, family, and the dogs keep me busy, and the site obviously is a lot of time too, oh but for a 9 day week... longer weekends!!!! In no particular order, thanks to Mike McCracken for the Sanborn Map that inspired the Maple Street page, David Herman for a lot of stuff about his father and Beth El, Bob Stanton for two stories which have been sitting here since last June or so (my bad), and Howard Street's finest, Jim Bessing, for the story about the George M. Newton Coal Company. This week I'm going to try and get some more work done on Dave Boone's waterfront pictures and the Ross Plumbing journals.

#3 The page about Isaac Hibbs, a Camden County jail guard who was killed during an escape in 1916 took a few days to get together, a lot of this required very long news articles to be retyped, so that I could link pages to all the people and places involved. I put images of news articles on the site a lot becasue it's faster than retyping them- the OCR software works good on paper, but not to well on some microfilm. Anyway, if you are visiting a page and could transcribe (retype) an image of a news article it would be very helpful, especially if the article contains names of people, streets, or places... businesses,, schools, etcetera. That way I can go back and add links.

#4 Sometime today or tomorrow this site will record its 210,000 hit. I've solved the "too many people on the site" problem for the most part. Things will get even better in 2007, as I intend to upgrade the connection to a business account, which will increase bandwidth a lot.

#5 I got a 1919 Camden City Directory off of eBay, however, it need to be completely rebound. I've put it aside for the moment, hopefully this can be dine in the spring.

#6 Goodness knows there is more... there is always more! Check out the page on Camden movie star James Cardwell, I've added articles and pictures from 1944, when his first film The Sullivans, made its Camden debut at the old Savar Theater.

#7 Retired Camden police officer Ed Eldred is just out of the hospital, so if you would like to send a get well message or just say hello, e-mail me.
