BURGLAR GETS NOTHING, LEAVES FINGERPRINTS

Mrs. Marion Miller, of 257 Mount Vernon Street, reported to police today that a burglar broke into her home Wednesday and ransacked the second and third floors. The intruder was frightened away without any loot.

Detective Frank Crawford found that entrance had been gained by taking a pane of glass out of a side window. Crawford said that he had obtained fingerprints.

George Stinsman, of 14 York Street, reported that someone had broke into his home and stolen a washing machine valued at $59.

November 22, 1886

William Walker, aged 26 years of No. 576 Mt. Vernon Street, a conductor on the Kaighn Avenue line of the Camden and Suburban Railway Company, was fatally crushed about 6:30 o'clock this morning at the Kaighn's Point ferry between two trolley cars.  The sad accident happened while Walker was preparing his first trip of the day.

It appears that when Walker's car with Motorman Chew on the front drew into the ferry, a Fifth Street car was already standing at the end of the track.  Chew brought his car to a standstill within three feet of the Fifth Street car.  No sooner had the car stopped then Walker hopped from the back and grabbed the rope attached to the trolley pole, and ran around to the rear of the car.

 EXTRA MAN HAD CAR

He was standing between the rear end of his car the the front end of the Fifth Street car, endeavoring to adjust the pole when a Second and Third Street trolley car came bowling along at a fair rate of speed.  An extra man named Leech was running the car while the regular motorman was at breakfast.

Workmen on their way to the ferry noticing the speed of the car and seeing that Leech who was applying the brakes with all his strength, could not bring it to a stop without striking the Kaighn Avenue car, yelled to Walker warning him of his danger.

The unfortunate conductor, however, did not hear the cries and the next moment the Third Street car crashed into the Kaighn Avenue car, jamming it back against the Fifth Street car and pinioning Walker at the hips.

HORRIBLY CRUSHED

A score of persons ran to Walker's aid, and as the Kaighn Avenue car was drawn ahead a little the unfortunate man would have fallen to the ground had not a dozen willing hands supported him.  His body was horribly crushed, and many of those in the crown were made sick by the terrible sight.

The patrol wagon was quickly on the scene and conveyed the injured man to Cooper Hospital with lightening speed.  He breathed his last as he was being carried in the hospital.  Walker was one of the most popular conductors in the employ of the trolley company and was known as a conscientious and painstaking employee.  He leaves a wife and child.

TROLLEY CAR VICTIM HAS A SAD FUNERAL
WILLIAM WALKER WHOSE LIFE WAS
CRUSHED OUT BURIED YESTERDAY

FELLOW CARMEN'S SORROW
LARGE CROWD SHEDS TEARS AROUND
THE DEAD CONDUCTOR'S BIER

TROLLEY CAR DRAPED IN BLACK CARRIED
HIS FELLOW WORKMEN TO THE GRAVE

The funeral of William Walker, the unfortunate conductor of the Camden and Suburban trolley road, who was crushed to death Thursday morning by being caught between two trolley cars at Kaighn's Point, took place yesterday from his late home, 576 Mt. Vernon Street.  It was a funeral marked with genuine sadness and the scenes at the home and grave were touching.

The services were held in the afternoon and Rev. George T. Harris of the Trinity M.E. Church officiated.

The funeral cortege was led by a draped trolley car, in which forty-eight employees of the trolley company rode.  Following were the carriages, which proceeded to Evergreen Cemetery, where the interment was made.  About the grave stood the trolley men with bared heads, and as the young widow passed by with every evidence of unspeakable grief, very few of the tender-hearted men there who did not mingle their tears with the woman left alone.

The body reposed in a neat casket with silver trimmings.  Clustered about were beautiful floral designs.  One in particular, from Walker's fellow employees, called the fatal hour and composed of roses, carnations, azaleas and other flowers, attracted attention.

Walker's popularity could have no better evidence of its genuineness than by the sympathetic tears of many who gathered about his bier.  Pall bearers were Harry Middleton, John Dietz, William Sloan and William Smith.

MAN GIVEN 60 DAYS FOR ROW AT HOSPITAL

William Clark, 35, colored, of 732 Mt. Vernon Street, was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail on a disorderly conduct charge by Police Judge Pancoast yesterday.

Patrolman William Rodgers testified he arrested Clark at the West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital where Rodgers had asked for treatment for a dog bite. According to hospital attaches, he became abusive. Earlier, Rodgers said, Clark had entered the Second district police station seeking a warrant for the arrest of the dog's owner.

Clark told the court that a policeman, not Rodgers, struck him at the hospital. He was informed by the court to make any complaint to Acting Chief John Golden.

In 1861, when the men of this city were hearing and heeding the call of the Immortal Lincoln to a service
meaning life or death, a small but heroic company heard the voice of another and mightier leader, above the din and tumult of strife and war; and this company organized a Sunday School Society that culminated in the organization of Eighth Street M. E. Church.

The Sunday School of this little Society was held in a butcher shop in the building now used for a dwelling. The present number being 748 Mt. Vernon street. This was owned by John Paschal, then transferred by sale to Joseph Hoflinger, whose daughter, Mrs. Eliza Robinson, is still with us, and one of the oldest members of the present church society. Mr. John Long was elected superintendent of the school. In his hands it prospered. A sufficient number of children were gathered to warrant the organizing of a school and the scattering families supplied chairs, Bibles, singing 'books, etc., for the regular sessions. This school outgrew its first meeting-place, and was then transferred to a frame house facing Walnut street and adjoining the present church.

Church Asks Aid For Mother of 10, Destitute By Fire

To the Editor:
Sir—Mrs. Holmes, a mother of 10 children, ages three to 16, who was operating a music store on Mt. Ephraim avenue until her family was made homeless by fire which destroyed all the children's clothing, will appreciate any clothes anyone may donate. She now is living at 760 Mt.
Vernon street. Food and rent are paid by city relief. Public-spirited citizens have given a stove and many other- necessities. But clothes— shoes, stockings, pants, underwear, dresses, coats for girls and boys — in fact, everything in wearing apparel, is badly needed. Will call for your gift. Anything given appreciated.
